Indian railways has 114,500 kilometers of total track over a route of 65,000 kilometers and almost 7,500 stations. It now has the world’s fourth largest railway network after that of the United States, Russia and China. These are commendable figures if we compare since the introduction of Indian railways in 1853.

There is IRCTC, a sparkling service of Indian railways. It has played a substantial role in changing the face of railway ticketing in India. Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is a subsidiary of the Indian railways that handles the catering, tourism and online ticketing operations of the railways. IRCTC has bought a dramatic change to the outlook of the Indian railways and made it very convenient and comfortable.

Earlier when it comes to booking the train tickets or the ticket cancellation, one has to go and stand in long queues to book the tickets and have to run around to check the status of the bookings and take special care of the tickets. With the introduction of IRCTC, it has pioneered Internet-based rail ticket booking through its website, so no more standing in the long queues for hours as well as from the mobile phones via GPRS or SMS.

Even the ticket cancellations or modifications can be done online. They have also introduced the concept of E-tickets which gives you the peace of mind that once you book the ticket online, the same will be either e-mailed to you as well as will be sent through SMS alert. In addition to that, they also offers the option of I-tickets that are basically like regular tickets except that they are booked online and delivered by post.

For the convenience of the passengers, IRCTC have launched a website erail.in whereon you make your quick and fast search to book your ticket, make the payment using your debit / credit cards and receive the tickets there and then. Not only that you can also check the PNR status of your booking / tickets by entering your PNR Number on the website, but also train enquiry.

IRCTC also organizes budget and deluxe package tours for domestic and foreign tourists. A popular tourism package for budget tourists covering important tourist destination across India is Bharat Darshan Luxury tourism packages are also available, that involve special luxury trains such as Palace on Wheels, Royal Orient Express etc., and many such services.
The modern railways system is an all new face of the Indian railways. Who would have thought it ever that we will see these many changes and changes for the betterment in the Railways weather it is for the Booking systems, comfortable travel or convenience of booking the tickets while sitting at home or office.

    PNR No. 8729379331, Filed tdr within 15 mins after train departure. But railway refused to refund the amount with some stupid reason that tdr filed after 2 hours. When I requested to reopen the case with all the required information, no response no reply from concerned department. and no one knows where the process is stucking. they just know that its a mistake from railway side. Lots of mails done. No acknowledgement at all, neither from IRCTC nor from railway. Everyone is telling a new story in air. If you guys cannot provide proper support to customer, why do you imply such silly rules.

  6. PNR NO-8520768246,TRAN.ID-100000185101272 Booked on- 05/03/2015 for the journey on 06/03/2015. I TIRED TO CANECL THE TICKET 12 HOURS BEFORE JOURNEY BUT IT GAVE ME ERROR MESSAGE, SO I FILED TDR. BUT ITS BEEN A MONTH BUT MONEY IS NOT CREDITED BACK TO MY ACCOUNT- 641.24 RS HAS BEEN PAID.
    PLEASE REFUND THE SAME IMMEDIATELY.
