A team of renowned mass communication specialists of UNESCO drew up a plan for the institute. It was established on August 17, 1965 under the department of Ministry of Information and Communication. Dr. Wilbur Schramm headed the well-known authority on communication. The institute was registered as an autonomous organisation under the Societies Registration Act (1860) on January 22, 1966.

There are two major training programmes and four one-year post graduate diploma courses and two four month diploma courses being offered by IIMC. Various other specialised short-term courses are also offered by the mass communication institute.

New Delhi is the headquarters of Indian Institute of Mass Communication. There are three regional centres i.e., Aizawl (Mizoram), Amravati (Maharashtra) and Dhenkanal (Orissa). Further plans are in progress to open two more new regional centres.
