Great happenings often have humble beginnings and the effort of some persistent individuals along the path leads to the greatness. Such an event was initiated by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed a Unani medicine expert in 1906 in New Delhi resulting in the Hamdard University. This practitioner of the ancient Islamic medicine system dreamt of chronicling the miraculous system of medicine under the modern scientific light and converting it into a fully operational center for teaching this ancient art and science of healing. Though this did not come to full fruition during his life span, his sons and students carried the mantle of this idea and established laboratories for a deep research into this medicinal science.

A trust or Wakf was formed immediately after the independence and the goals were set to promote activities in the fields of education, social service, medicine and medicinal research. With the inclusion of modern curriculum and the fruits of half a century’s continuous research, a proper and professional curriculum was proposed to the government in 1972 for establishing an institution to teach the same. This institution was then named Hamdard College of Pharmacy. In 1989 Rajiv Gandhi, then prime minister of India, announced Hamdard University as a deemed university accredited under the NAAC [National Association of Alternative Chemists].
