Samajwadi Party (SP) is a regional political party of Uttar Pradesh in India. This is a democratic socialist party, representing the interests of OBC (Other Backward Classes) especially. The SP has given outside support to the centre, the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government. Ram Manohar Lohia is recognised as the guiding light for the Samajwadi Party. The SP believes in creating a socialist society. The Samajwadi Party emerged at the time of breakup in Janta Dal. Then the SP came out as a regional party in the India political forum. Currently Akhilesh Yadav, son of shri Mulayam Singh, is the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.
Abu Asim Azmi, Azam Khan, Ram Gopal Yadav, Shivpal Singh Yadav and Rajendra Chaudhary are the other noted Samajwadi figures. There are 22 members of Samajwadi Party in the 15th Lok Sabha. This makes it the third largest party in the lower house. Smt. Jaya Bachchan, the wife of Amitabh Bachachan, is a Member of Parliament of SP. The Samajwadi Party works on the principle of equality and builds up a democratic outlook in India.
